I installed McAfee anti virus in my laptop today. The worst part is it takes 99-100% CPU (May be in that way it is opposing any other viruses to come in as it itself acting as DOS attack :) ). So, I couldn't work at all and got irritated and finally uninstalled it. So, now the system is working fine. :)

Don't use AVG free either. It gets stuck if it's unable to remove a virus. Not only that it'll demand lot of exercise on your part to uninstall it. If you want to install something legal on your laptop, try norton antivirus minimal from google pack, it works pretty fine
It wasn't free AV. but it sucks.
