How to impress manager:
Constantly prove that you are alive and working hard :)
Should be active listener. in the sense, you should listen to all other team member's work and the problems that they are getting and give any ideas to overcome the problems..etc
you should constantly asking him for more work...ofcourse you have to finish previous work that is in your plate.. :) :)

no no dear..this is an ideal case, I am talking about..if you satisfy all these...then your manager surely gets impressed..but this is not must case..sometimes some managers don't look at any thing other than employee's performance..:) then ofcourse, you are at right place..:) as you came out of pointer's problem so fastly..:)
Well going by your parameters I am doing badly :( I never ping my manager unless to ask him for a leave. We just had a meeting wherein I was caught day dreaming while others were discussing their problems. And I never ask for more work :P
One more thing: you should present your work SMARTLY.
